App Dev for All and Internet in a Box Team Up to Expand Digital Access

App Dev for All is excited to announce a new partnership with Internet-in-a-Box (IIAB)—a transformative global initiative bringing high-quality learning content to communities where the internet is out of reach. IIAB “learning hotspots” serve dozens of countries, delivering resources such as Wikipedia, Khan Academy, healthcare libraries, and OpenStreetMap, all without the need for internet or a mobile data plan.

Internet-in-a-Box and App Dev for All share a vision of global digital equity in which access to opportunity doesn’t depend on access to wealth. To power this vision, App Dev for All will focus on three key initiatives:

1. Distribute Code on the Go with Internet-in-a-Box

Code on the Go, our offline-first app development environment, will be available as an option for anyone setting up or adding apps to an Internet-in-a-Box device. Code on the Go makes it possible to create Android apps using Android phones and tablets, without the need for internet access, a computer, or cloud tools.

2. Expand Access to All Internet-in-a-Box Resources

We’re developing a dedicated Android app to explore and download content from any nearby Internet-in-a-Box device. With this app, users will be able to search, preview, and selectively download resources directly to an Android phone or tablet to use at any time. This capability will enable access to educational and informational content even when users are outside Wi-Fi range.

3. Enable Internet-in-a-Box to Run on Android Phones

In its current form, Internet-in-a-Box typically runs on Raspberry Pi hardware. To further reduce cost and technical barriers, we will develop a version of Internet-in-a-Box that runs natively on Android phones. This will allow a single phone or tablet to act as a local hotspot that enables nearby devices to access the learning library. This capability will make Internet-in-a-Box even more portable, affordable, and scalable, especially in regions where Android phones are increasingly common.

More details about our collaboration with Internet-in-a-Box will be unveiled at Wikimania 2025. We look forward to sharing prototypes and hearing from the community!
